Is this not obvious? If you live in Austin, and venture out your front door even once in a blue moon, you’ve crossed paths with someone that has something wildly innovative going on. Whether it be an entrepreneur launching a specialized startup in the technology sector, or an Austin thought leader that has developed their own personal brand of expertise… you have most certainly discovered that Austin is a rich breeding ground for thought leaders and creative authorities.
In fact, “Father of Texas” Stephen F. Austin led Austin’s first “marketing campaign” in 1825 by advertising his colony and ultimately resulting in 300 families moving to the region. (Now that’s one spectacular realtor!) Right from the beginning, the city of Austin’s branded itself “exclusive and uncommon.” Stephen F. Austin selected settlers based on whether he believed they would be appropriately industrious. Overall, these educated families belonged to a higher economic scale than most immigrants, and brought some property with them. This relatively high level of literacy had a great impact on the future of Austin. According to historian William C. Davis, because they were literate, the colonists “absorbed and spread the knowledge and news always essential to uniting people to a common purpose.” This group is known as The Old Three Hundred, and for the purposes of this article, let’s just say Stephen F. Austin was one of the first formal Austin thought leaders of Texas, and boy, did he know how to develop, replicate, scale, and market!
“In order to get to the next level of whatever you’re doing, you must think and act in a wildly different way than you previously have been. You cannot get to the next phase of a project without a grander mind-set, more acceleration, and extra horsepower.” —Grant Cardone, Entrepreneur, Speaker, and Author
Sometimes it feels like Austin sits on an invisible portal to a multi-dimensional expressway blazing with light and color fueled by the city’s collective imagination. After all, this is a place that turns ideas into results and creativity into commerce. Most towns can’t get away with such notions… such efforts can come off contrived or overdone. But we live by the code “Keep Austin Weird,” so no wonder we grow fantastic entrepreneurs, creatives and Austin thought leaders! Austin accepts the dreamers and the doers alike with open arms. We are a come-as-you-are kind of community.
Austin also provides a wellspring of recreation for busy thinkers that thrive on diversity. Being The Live Music Capital of The World makes inspiration in the form of melody easy to acquire anytime your heart desires. You would think with so many live music venues and musicians lumped together, there would be a lot of laying around in hammocks and hanging out in coffee shops petting dogs. There is. But beyond the horizontal landscape, there’s an outdoor recreation scene that is so healthy and fit, one can shed pounds by osmosis. (Wouldn’t that be neat if that were true.) Austin thought leaders take full advantage of the countless miles of hike & bike trails, swimming pools filled by natural springs, local farms & gardens, and sun year around – so we get to be as health conscious as we want.
In the end, being an entrepreneur, thought leader, or influencer is contingent on what lies inside you, and your willingness to stop at nothing to continually pursue excellence in your field. Austin also just happens to be a city that exudes a collaborative energy which nurtures this passion and fosters business. It is undoubtedly (in my opinion) the most collaborative entrepreneurial city in America. Over my 20+ years of being an entrepreneur and business owner, I’ve not experienced any other city in America where entrepreneurs and business owners genuinely help and support each other’s growth. It makes perfect sense that Austin consistently makes the list of Best Places to Live in America as well as the Best City for Startups and New Entrepreneurs. It’s a place that offers everything someone needs to take a deep breath, spread their wings, and fly.
